Suriya’s Kanguva refused to pick up on its third day at the box office, after showing a major drop in its collection on Friday, day two. The film opened on a good note and collected Rs 24 crore. However, despite it entering the first weekend, the collections only dipped further, with Friday adding Rs 9.25 crore and Saturday bringing in another Rs 9.50 crore nett, taking the total of three days to Rs 42.75 crore nett in India, reported the trade website Sacnilk.
The film will cross the benchmark of Rs 50 crore with its Sunday collection now. But, it will continue to fare below expectations even then. For a high-budgeted and heavily promoted film like Kanguva, Rs 50 crore was never considered a benchmark. A more than 50 per cent drop in single-day collections after the first-day business is not just concerning, but also not good for the future of the film in theatres.
Kanguva received mixed reviews, and the makers received several complaints about its loud music. The same has been reflected in its numbers. The film’s slow run will be benefitting Amaran, actor Sivakarthikeyan’s biographical drama, which continues to attract audiences to theatres.
Also starring Sai Pallavi, the film is nearing the benchmark of Rs 200 crore nett at the box office, with Rs 6 crore nett on its third Saturday. Kanguva’s loss could just be Amaran’s gain at the ticket window, in the absence of any other Tamil biggie in theatres.
